The iconic Pirate Bay logo has stood for quite the while as the centerpiece of the online pirate community. It resembled free movies, TV shows, software, porn, and various other goodies, and now, it lives on — on USB sticks.

Sandryds Handel, a Swedish retailer, has officially registered the Pirate Ship logo, crossbones, cassette, and all. The move was done legally though the Swedish Patent and Registration Office, since the logo was never registered officially.

“They took it from the public … and turned it into their logo that they control,” said Peter Sunde, who is a co-founder of the torrent tracking website. Sunde wasn’t exactly amused with the retailer’s move.

Could this have simply been done to teach The Pirate Bay a little lesson? It would appear as if Sunde’s reaction is exactly what people are looking for.

Sunde has stated that The Pirate Bay will challenge the decision of the license grant by the office of Patents and Registrations.

The moves comes just after we’ve learned The Pirate Bay is shutting down for good.
