Google Now Allows Developers to Submit Extensions

Google announced yesterday on its Chromium Blog that it now allows developers to submit and upload their extensions to the newly created Google Chrome’s Extension Gallery. This service was said to be in the works since early this year and it’s expected that it will help Google Chrome become more popular.
According to Google, to submit an extension, developers will have to agree to Google’s terms and conditions. Then, they will just need to upload the code and an icon of the extension. Google also says that developers will optionally be able to submit descriptions, screenshots and even YouTube videos explaining the extensions.
Google went on to say:
“For most extensions, the review process is fully automated. The only extensions we’ll review manually are those that include an NPAPI component and all content scripts that affect “file://” URLs. For security reasons, developers of these types of extensions will need to provide some additional information before they can post them in the gallery.”
To further help developers, Google has actually released documentation of a few extenstions that have been already created. Google will also be opening the Extension Gallery in the next few days to a small “group of trusted testers.”
So far the only browser that offered extensions was Mozilla’s Firefox, which was backed by Google for quite a while. An interesting new rivalry seems to be brewing between Chrome and Firefox. We will definitely keep following this story.
