Apple Partnering With Record Labels To Work On ‘Cocktail’
Apple has started working on a new project code-named “Cocktail”. This is apparently an attempt to get people to buy less single tracks and more complete/full albums. Apple has partnered with EMI, Sony Music, Warner Music and Universal Music Group. According to an article by Financial Times, Apple is planning to increase album sales by including, “a new interactive booklet, sleeve notes and other interactive features” with every download.
Financial Times took the opportunity to say that Apple is “racing to offer” its fabled tablet device “in time for the Christmas shopping season”. This kind of contradicts reports from last week, where Steve Jobs was quoted saying the device had been “cemented” for a 2010 launch. One more thing that is confusing, even to the folks at TechCrunch, is the fact that Financial Times seems to be tying the ‘Cocktail’ music project with the tablet. They also seem to mention a “September launch for the project.” In reality, I think no one is really sure what Financial Times is trying to say with their statement:
“The [tablet] device could be launched alongside the new content deals, including those aimed at stimulating sales of CD-length music, according to people briefed on the project. The labels and Apple are working towards a September launch date for the project, which aims to boost interest in albums by bundling liner notes and video clips with the music.”
From then on FT seems to jump from tablet to the ‘Cocktail’ project back and forth creating a complete paradox that no one seems to be able to figure out. Whatever it is, we are doubtful we will actually get to see the tablet being release this September. As for the ‘Cocktail’ project, we are excited to learn more about it, and when we do we will definitely post more information.
Financial Times: please try to make things clearer next time for readers. Perhaps, you shouldn’t mix “cocktail (s)” with other tech stuff.
