.CO Top-Level Domain Names Officially Available Today

domain-name-puzzleIf you just cannot seem to find the perfect .com domain name, today may be your glorious day. That’s because the .CO Internet S.A.S. has announced the general availability of the .CO top-level domain beginning after 11AM Pacific time (2PM Eastern) via major domain name registrars, of which include GoDaddy, Network Solutions, and Register.com.

GoDaddy will be pricing .CO domain names for about $29.99 yearly, so if you do manage to score a nice domain name, it’s certainly a worthy investment. Pricing at other registrars can be found by visiting their respective home pages.

But as one would expect, it would seem as if the greatest of the great .CO TLDs have been registered. Still, there are many gems to be found.

.XXX Top-Level Domain To Be Approved Friday

xxx-tld-delayedAt a public forum at an ICANN [Internet Corporation for Assigned Names and Numbers] meeting in Brussels, Belgium today, general counsel of ICANN John Jeffrey announced that the controversial .xxx top-level domain name could be approved as soon as Friday, June 25th, 2010.

The idea of a top-level domain name exclusively for the adult industry came about approximately ten years ago, and despite protest from some members of the adult entertainment industry, the idea has carried on and eventually come to fruition.

So what is a top-level domain name? Well, .com, .net, .org, .edu are all top-level domain names. It is — as the name suggests — the top-level domain name before the actual domain name. Potential uses for the new top-level domain name could be: sexygirls.xxx, or even sex.xxx.

Get the idea?

First .Com Domain Name Turns 25-Years-Old

Symbolics.com LogoIt’s hard to believe that it’s been twenty-five years since the first .Com domain name was registered, but it’s true. Today, symbolics.com has turned a whopping twenty-five years old. Whilst the company behind the domain name is no longer in business, there’s no shortage of celebration over the milestone.

The domain name was registered on the 15th of March in 1985 — one of six domain names registered that year. Compare that to amount of domain names registered today, and you’ll quickly see the value in symbolics.com. In 1997, the amount of .com domain names registered topped one million. Fast forward thirteen years, and millions more have been registered.

So much so that individuals are having trouble registering domain names. Just ask anyone familiar with registering domain names, and you’ll likely be responded to with “everything’s taken.”

Arabic Top-Level Domain Name Registrations Begin

arabicdomainnameWe’ve reported previously that non-English top-level domain names would soon be available — and today’s the start of registration for .masr [.مصر] domain names. The TLD will represent the country of Egypt, and literally translates to “.Egypt”.

“It is a great moment for us,” said Tarek Kamel, Egypt’s information technology officer at a conference Monday.

The registrations began at approximately 10 PM Greenwich Mean Time, and it is currently unknown how many of the .masr domains have been registered. What we do know, however, is that this opens up new doors for the approximately 300 million Arabic speakers of the world.
