Apple’s Mac OS X 10.6.3 Right Around The Corner

March 6th, 2010 2 Comments   Posted in Technology

Apple Modern LogoOn Friday, Apple released the beta of Mac OS X 10.6.3 (also known as Build 10D567) to developers — a 718MB download — similar to beta builds seeded before it. Thus far, there are seemingly no issues to report with the beta, which could signify its release sometime in the near future.

The update is said to improve both security and compatibility within QuickTime X, enhance the performance of the Apple 64-bit Logic Pro Suite, and improve compatibility with printers of varies makes.

The California-based company is said to have asked developers to particularly focus on the aforementioned features of OS X — printing, Quicktime, iChat, and graphics drivers. More »

Mac OS X 1062

Snow Leopard users, rejoice! Apple has released Mac OS X update 10.6.2. The new update is said to fix a lot of bugs, including the one that deletes people’s personal accounts after using the guest account. According to Apple, depending on your computer the size of the update could vary.

Unfortunately for Hackintoshers, it’s still not clear whether or not the new update kills support for Intel Atom processors. It was being reported this morning that the latest developer seed [Build 10C540] released last week would not support Atom. We’ll have to be a little bit patient to find out.

Update: It’s been confirmed, Intel Atom processor support is gone. It’s a sad day for Hackintoshers.

Snow Leopard 1062 Atom Support

Hackintoshers rejoice! It looks like Max OS X Snow Leopard 10.6.2 will be supporting Intel Atom Processors after all. The news come once again from Stell’s Blog, who first discovered and started the rumor that the new version of Snow Leopard would kill Atom support, last week. In an update to the post Stell says:

“Wow, didn’t expect to get linked all over the internet for this damn post. Anyways, in the latest development build Atom appears to have resurrected itself zombie style in 10C535. The Atom lives another day, but nothing is concrete until the final version of 10.6.2 is out.”

I’d advise you not to get your hopes up just yet, as nothing is official at this time.

Intel Atom LogoMac OS X Snow Leopard 10.6.2 has not been released, and yet it has been confirmed that it will kill support for Intel Atom Processors. This radical decision will mostly affect Hackintosh Netbook users who have hacked Atom based netbooks to run Snow Leopard.

There are a quite a few things you can do to prevent your dreams from being crushed though. You can either stay with Mac OS X  version 10.6.1 or earlier, or upgrade to Mac OS X 10.6.2 but run a customized kernel.

Apple Announces It Will Support Windows 7 in Boot Camp by End of 2009

Win 7 Boot Camp on iMac

After Microsoft officially launched its new OS, Windows 7, Apple published a document, in which they announced that before the year ends, Mac OS X Snow Leopard will support Windows 7 in Boot Camp. Of course, this doesn’t immediately mean you can’t run Windows 7 in Boot Camp, as it has been proven that Microsoft’s new OS running in Boot Camp works just fine on a Mac computer. Apple’s support will only make things a bit easier.

Unfortunately, Apple also broke the news that a lot of early Intel-based Macs will not support Windows 7 in Boot Camp at all. We’ll keep you updated.

Are People Angry at CNET’s Windows 7 and Mac OS X Comparison Test on A MacBook Pro?

Apple & Windows Logos

First of all, for those of you who don’t know, let me explain in a nutshell what CNET did. They basically ran a comparison test on a 2008 MacBook Pro using 64-bit versions of Windows 7 and Mac OS X Snow, to see which OS performed better. Turns out Snow Leopard was faster than Windows 7 on the MacBook Pro. There’s where it all started.

I’ve been reading this story all morning in a number of blogs, no big deal. What really caught my attention is the comments from readers. Angry comments that is. You see, a number of people, and let me just say I agree with them, think it’s unfair and maybe even a bit paradoxical to say that Windows 7 runs slower or performs poorly on an Apple MacBook Pro computer. Many are celebrating Mac OS X, but these people are not looking at the big picture. It being that Snow Leopard had a slight advantage over Windows 7 because it’s running on a computer that was designed, and engineered specifically for it to perform its best. More »

Apple to Launch Ad Campaign in Time for Windows 7 Launch

Apple & Windows Logos

With only a few days left, everyone is getting ready for the official launch of Windows 7, including Apple. According to BusinessWeek, Apple will seize the opportunity to win over PC users by launching an ad campaign basically trashing Windows and portraying the Mac as a superior and better operating system. Apple’s senior vice-president for marketing, Philip W. Schiller said ”It presents a very good opportunity for us.”

The ads, as always, are expected to show that Macs are less vulnerable to viruses. Apple also plans to poke fun at Microsoft for “making XP owners go through an arduous process to upgrade to Windows 7—one that includes backing up all their files to an external drive, reformatting their PC, and then reinstalling all of their old programs, assuming they still have the CDs,” said the BusinessWeek report. Blackra1n Jailbreak for iPhone OS 3.1.2 Now Available for Mac Too

Blackra1n Mac

Just a couple of days ago, George Hotz released his jailbreaking tool for iPhone OS 3.1.2, Blackra1n. Unfortunately, that version was only available for Windows users. Fast forward 48 hours and a Mac version is released. Just like the Windows version, the Mac version works with all generations of the iPhone and iPod Touch. The new Snow Leopard compatible version is available for download for free at the Blackra1n website.

Alas, if you bought a new iPhone 3GS within the last 2 weeks, chances are you won’t be able to jailbreak it any time soon or ever.

Apple Finally Acknowledges Major Bug in Snow Leopard

October 13th, 2009 No Comments   Posted in Technology

applelogoA few hours ago, Apple released a statement which finally acknowledges the presence of a major bug in its new operating system, Mac OS X Snow Leopard. The bug causes users to lose absolutely all of their data from their personal accounts after they log into their guest account. Here’s part of the statement Apple released Monday evening:

“We are aware of the issue, which occurs only in extremely rare cases, and we are working on a fix.”

I guess that for Mac users it should be good to know that at least Apple is finally aware of the problem and is looking to fix it. Unfortunately, I find it highly unlikely Apple will come up with a fix to recover all of the users’ lost data.
