Microsoft to Release Silverlight 4 on April 15

Microsoft announced today at the Visual Studio 2010 launch event in Las Vegas that Silverlight 4 will be released on Thursday, April 15. The new version of Silverlight will be available for grabs at the official Silverlight download page on Microsoft’s website.
Silverlight 4 will include new major features such as support for the Google Chrome browser. Additionally, the new version will bring webcam and microphone support, printing and control capabilities, multicast streaming, output protection, the ability to run applications outside a browser, and offline DRM. The new Silverlight 4 also promises an enhanced user experience and improved speed and performance. The update will also include a plugin for Visual Studio.
Release Candidate Version of Silverlight 4 Now Available for Download

Microsoft announced today at the MIX 2010 developer conference in Las Vegas, Nevada that a Release Candidate [RC] version of Silverlight 4 is now available for download. Microsoft Vice president of the Developer Division Scott Guthrie revealed that Silverlight 4 will include webcam and microphone support, multicast streaming, output protection, and offline DRM. Guthrie also said that the final version for Silverlight 4, which is expected to be released “next month,” will allow users to watch streams on multiple monitors.
eBay Vice President of Technology Raji Arasu demonstrated a new Silverlight 4-based eBay application [pictured] on stage during the keynote. The application includes webcam support and image cropping capabilities, allowing users to easily list an item on eBay from the comfort of their desktop. The eBay application will be available as soon as next month when the final version of Silverlight 4 is released.
Microsoft Releases Silverlight 4 in Beta for Developers

Microsoft recently released Silverlight 4 in beta at the Professional Developers Conference [PDC] in Los Angeles, California. The beta is currently available for developers only.
Microsoft Silverlight 4 will be full of new features, including:
- More fluid animations
- Webcam, microphone, and printing support
- Start times up to 200% faster than Silverlight 3
- Deep zoom and multi-touch support
- Google Chrome support [Yes, finally!]
Microsoft has put Silverlight 4 in direct competition with Adobe AIR 2.0 with its ability to take rich-media applications that fully support HTML and web integration outside the browser. Silverlight 4 will also support notifications.
