Mac Pro and Cinema Display

Following up with our earlier report that Apple intends to release a 27-inch LED Cinema display this June, the California-based hardware and software giant is also planning to release their latest and greatest version of the Mac Pro desktop computer.

The ultra-powerful new system is said to include two Xenon 5600 hexacore CPUs from Intel. In addition to the dodeca-core machine, Apple will also make a single-chip variant available frequencies of 2.66Ghz, 2.8Ghz, 2.93Ghz, and 3.33Ghz. According to AppleInsider, “these new 32 nanometer chips have 12MB of L3 cache, and 6 cores with 12 threads for each CPU.”

The Apple community is seemingly on fire now, with conversation over these revelations spreading like wildfire. It’s going to be an interesting Summer.

Newegg Ships Bogus Intel Core i7 Processors

March 6th, 2010 5 Comments   Posted in Online, U.S.

In what’s been called an “incorrect inventory” by a popular online technology retailer, Newegg has shipped out a series of Intel Core i7 Processors that turned out to be nothing more than bogus. A total of nine customers thus far have been affected, receiving nothing more than a clay heatsink with a sticker of a fan on it, labels with spelling errors and grammatical mistakes (also a manual with blank pages), and a piece of scrap metal as the processor. It sounds completely ridiculous, but it’s absolutely true.

Newegg is currently aware of the situation, and made the following statement:

“Newegg is aware of a shipping error that occurred with certain recent orders of the Intel Core i7-920 CPU. After investigating the issue internally it appears one of our long term partners mistakenly shipped a small number of demo boxes instead of functional units. Our customer service team has already begun proactively reaching out to the affected customers. In line with our commitment to ensure total customer satisfaction, we are doing everything in our power to resolve the issue as soon as possible and with the least amount of inconvenience to our customers.” More »

Intel Core i9 Chip Finds Itself For Sale on eBay

intelcorei9ebay

It’s certainly wasn’t a Virgin Mary grilled-cheese sandwich up for auction this time around on eBay. It was the Intel Core i9 chip. The supposed six-core chip was priced at $1,200, with the auction ending on December 1st. While we can’t confirm the validity of the chip, the buyer is certainly reputable with 100% positive feedback.

If the chip was in fact real however, that would have meant that it was somehow leaked from a manufacturing plant, where we can imagine that security is tight.

The Taiwanese seller claims that the chip was tested and 100% working.  The chip is expected to make its debut sometime next year.

Mac OS 1062 Atom Support

Hackintoshers, rejoice! Intel Atom processor support has returned to Snow Leopard. If you remember well, at the beginning of this month Apple released update 10.6.2 for Mac OS X, which killed off Intel Atom Processor support completely.

The fix, which is a full replacement kernel for Mac OS X, comes courtesy of a member of the InsanelyMac forum. At the moment it’s pretty rough, meaning it will take some real serious tuning-up. It’s expected than in a week or so, a more user-friendly tool will be released. We’ll definitely let you know, so be sure to keep checking Erictric.

It looks like the world’s got a new super-fast supercomputer. The Cray XT5, also known as Jaguar, has surpassed the previous fastest supercomputer, “Roadrunner” by being able to process 1.75 petaflops per second. IMB’s Roadrunning computer now holds the number 2 spot on the list of the world’s faster super computers.

The computer isn’t new, however. Recent hardware upgrades have brought the system to the number 1 mark — but for how long?

We’ve got an interesting video for you after the break which actually demonstrates how each section of the server is upgraded from a four-core processor to a six-core processor, however this particular video is specific to Cray’s “Kraken” machine. More »

Mac OS X 10.6.2 Not Killing Intel Atom Processor Support After All

November 4th, 2009 No Comments   Posted in Technology

Snow Leopard 1062 Atom Support

Hackintoshers rejoice! It looks like Max OS X Snow Leopard 10.6.2 will be supporting Intel Atom Processors after all. The news come once again from Stell’s Blog, who first discovered and started the rumor that the new version of Snow Leopard would kill Atom support, last week. In an update to the post Stell says:

“Wow, didn’t expect to get linked all over the internet for this damn post. Anyways, in the latest development build Atom appears to have resurrected itself zombie style in 10C535. The Atom lives another day, but nothing is concrete until the final version of 10.6.2 is out.”

I’d advise you not to get your hopes up just yet, as nothing is official at this time.

Mac OS X Snow Leopard 10.6.2 to Kill Intel Atom Processor Support

November 3rd, 2009 No Comments   Posted in Technology

Intel Atom LogoMac OS X Snow Leopard 10.6.2 has not been released, and yet it has been confirmed that it will kill support for Intel Atom Processors. This radical decision will mostly affect Hackintosh Netbook users who have hacked Atom based netbooks to run Snow Leopard.

There are a quite a few things you can do to prevent your dreams from being crushed though. You can either stay with Mac OS X  version 10.6.1 or earlier, or upgrade to Mac OS X 10.6.2 but run a customized kernel.
