RIM Dominates U.S. Smartphone Market While Google Gains Ground Fast

The U.S. smartphone market share figures are in! And it looks like Android is doing much better than its competition in terms market share gain. According to mobile market share data by comScore, Research In Motion’s BlackBerry OS dominated the U.S. smartphone market with a whopping 43.0% share. Usage of the platform went up by 1.7% from 41.3% in a 3-month period between November 2009 and January 2010. Android usage increased by 4.3% from 2.8% to 7.1% in the same period of time, making it the highest gain out of the top five smartphone platforms.
The iPhone, on the other hand, didn’t see much of a difference. The platform usage gained only 0.3% of the market share from 24.8% to 25.1%. Enough to keep it in second place behind BlackBerry. There’s no really doubt in our minds now as to why Apple is going after the Android platform in the latest lawsuit filed against HTC. More »
Microsoft to Invest $1 Billion Into Windows Phone Platform

Microsoft is apparently planning to invest $1 billion in research and development of its very own Windows Mobile/Windows Phone mobile platform. Initially, there were some rumors and speculation stating that Microsoft was planning to acquire Palm or even Research In Motion [RIM]. Analysts have put such rumors to rest, noting that said acquisitions are very unlikely to take place. Instead, Microsoft will use the money to improve its existing mobile operating system.
In a recent market report by research firm Gartner, Windows Mobile managed to grabbed only 8.7% of the worldwide market share in 2009, which was actually dominated by Nokia’s Symbian with 46.9% of the market. Research In Motion and Apple took second and third place with 19.9% and 14.4% respectively.
If Microsoft advertises Windows Mobile/Windows Phone 7 in the same way it promotes the Xbox 360 and Windows 7, perhaps the mobile operating system can see its market share increased from the single digits to the double digits. With $1 billion in hand, Microsoft can accomplish seemingly anything.
