Windows 7 Surpasses Windows Vista Market Share

Official Windows 7 LogoIf you didn’t already know, Windows 7 is taking the computing market by storm. It hasn’t even been a full year since Microsoft’s latest operating system has gone on sale, and already it’s surpassed Windows Vista in total market share, according to data presented by NetMarketShare.

Windows 7 finally reached the milestone in July of this year, climbing from 13.70 percent in market share the month prior to 14.46 percent. Windows Vista, on the other hand, has gradually continued a decline to 14.34 percent in July — down from its high of 18.83 percent in October, 2009.

Neither Windows 7 or Windows Vista stand a chance against older brother Windows XP, which made its debut in 2003. XP still holds a whopping 62 percent of total market share, though the number has been waning with the widespread adoption of Windows 7.

Internet Explorer 6 Losing Market Share Fast

U.S. Browser Market Share May 2009 May 2010

Individuals have moved on by either updating to a new version of Internet Explorer or adopting a new browser. iPhone OS and Android Now 25% of Smartphone Sales

android-iphone-market-share-may-10

It would appear as if both Apple’s iPhone OS and Google’s Android OS are quite simply taking over the smartphone market. Data gathered by Gartner shows that both operating systems now make up at least 25% of smartphone sales, which is up 12% from one year earlier. iPhone OS comes in at 15.4% of that figure, whereas Android OS comes in at about 9.6%. The report indicates that most other smartphone companies lost relative share.

The number one smartphone operating system in use as of current is Symbian, believe it or not. Second in line is Research In Motion’s BlackBerry OS, followed by iPhone OS, and of course, Android OS.

It should be noted that the adoption of Android is seemingly skyrocketing, so it will certainly be interesting to see if it will surpass iPhone OS share in the near future. We’ll keep you posted.

Android Market Share Surpasses iPhone OS in US

Android v. iPhone OS market share - March 2010

A pleasant surprise has been revealed by AdMob today in their March 2010 mobile metric report. According to the company’s data, Android now surpasses iPhone OS in the United States as of March 2010. Currently, Android takes about 46% of market share in the US, where as iPhone OS market share has fallen to 39%.

Compared to the month prior, iPhone OS had 45% of the smartphone market share in the US, where Android continued its increase to 42%.

One can credit the increase in market share to the sheer amount of Android devices now available on multiple carriers. Apple’s iPhone — as most folks are aware — is only available from AT&T as of current.
