Motorola DROID update delayed

Droid fanatics, brace yourselves for some unpleasant news. It would appear as of if the Motorola update scheduled for today has been delayed according to official Verizon documents [imaged].

The apparent cause of the delay is due to a bug found at the last minute Wednesday night, thus leading to today’s release being delayed.

Unfortunately, no information is available with regard to the bug itself, when it will be cleared, or even when the update is slated to go live again.

We’ll certainly bring the latest news on this topic as we learn about it here.

Motorola Droid Outsells iPhone In First 74 Days On Sale

March 16th, 2010 1 Comment   Posted in Technology

Droid, iPhone, Nexus One sales

It may be tough to believe, but Motorola’s Droid smartphone actually outsold the original iPhone in the first 74 days of sale. The information comes directly from a blog post by Flurry Analytics, who notes that the Droid sold a whopping 1.05 million units in the first 74 days of sale. As for the iPhone, slightly less at 1 million.

Interestingly, Flurry has also included Google’s/HTC’s Nexus One smartphone, which of course, hasn’t done as well as the Droid or iPhone. The Nexus One came in at a mere 0.135 million — or 135,000 — in the first 74 days of sale.

Why 74 days, though? True it is that this is an unusual number to measure analytics, but it’s simply an effect of how long it took Apple to sell one million iPhones (74 days). This benchmark was used for both the Nexus One and Droid analytics gathering.

Google Launches New Gesture Search App for Android 2.0 And Above

March 3rd, 2010 No Comments   Posted in Technology

Google recently announced on the Official Google Mobile Blog the availability of a new awesome feature for devices running Android 2.0 and above [Droid and Nexus One] called “ Gesture Search,” which allows users to search for contacts, applications, bookmarks, and music tracks just by “drawing alphabet gestures on the touch screen.”

For example, if you’re looking for a contact named “Anna,” all you have to do is open Gesture Search and draw the letter “A.” The application will automatically recognize the letter and it will display all contacts and applications that start with A. To filter out the results even further, you’ll have to keep drawing the next letter in the name, in this case “N,” until you get the results you want. Additionally, if your letters tend to look like other letters [e.g. A like H], Gesture Search will display results for both characters. More »

Motorola Faux-Pas: Android 2.1 For DROID Not Coming This Week

February 11th, 2010 1 Comment   Posted in Technology

Recall that earlier this week we posted that Motorola has announced that Android 2.1 would be coming to the DROID this week. It was dandy thinking while it lasted, but we’ve received official word from Motorola on the matter, and quite simply, it isn’t happening.

A post today on the Motorola support forums reveals that Monday’s story was nothing more than a faux-pas, posted in advance, according to Forums Manager Matt.

“How embarrassing. Apparently we jumped the gun on these details….,” he wrote.

Motorola’s update page has been taken down, with links to the update page removed from the forums as well.

BlackBerry Curve Dominates US Smartphone Market in Q4 2009

February 9th, 2010 No Comments   Posted in Technology

Market research firm IDC has released its quarterly list of best-selling smartphones in the US for the fourth quarter of 2009. And it looks like the BlackBerry Curve series dominated the last quarter of the year, followed by none other than the very popular and trendy Apple iPhone. RIM managed to grab four other places, while Android-based devices by different manufacturers only got two.

It’s important to take into account that the list represents vendor sales only, which means the number of units sold to third-party retailers are the figures that count. It doesn’t matter if these third-party retailers only managed to sell a fraction of ordered units to consumers.

Click the break to see the full list, and get ready to be surprised by some of the results. More »

Motorola Droid Finally Gets Multitouch – Well, Kind of.

February 5th, 2010 1 Comment   Posted in Technology

Good and bad news, U.S. Droid owners. The Motorola Droid has finally received the one feature many of you have been coveting since the device was launched back in November 6, 2009. Yes, we’re talking about pinch-to-zoom multitouch capabilities. Unfortunately, the feature will only be available for the new Google Maps 3.4 app. That means no pinch-to-zoom support when browsing or looking at your photos — at least, not just quite yet.

The new one-app-only feature has been enabled for the Droid just a few days after a software update made the feature available to the thousands of Nexus One smartphones. The new Google Maps 3.4 is now available in the Android Marketplace. Be sure to grab it to activate the pinch-to-zoom feature. It’s only a matter of time before the Droid’s Browser and Gallery also get multitouch capabilities, just like the Nexus One did.
