Bing Bans “Sex” In Middle East

In an effort to keep minds off the naughty-naughty, Bing has not surprisingly banned a series of words in the Middle East, to keep eyes and mind off what shouldn’t matter.

Among the terms blocked: “sex,” “breast,” “porn,”  “ass,” “penetration,” “whore,” “lick,” and “intercourse.” All keywords which could potentially bring up some undesired results (or perhaps desired, in the case of American men). The blocking was discovered by OpenNet, who tested a slew of interesting words, only to find they were censored.

Other words tested (and blocked) include “sexy,” “anal,” “clitoris,” and “penis,” though “vagina” was not blocked — which completely blows our minds.

Well — certainly looks like Bing’s not your place to go for internet porn in the Middle East.

Not too long after the curious ‘incidents’ which resulted in the internet going down in Iran, we’re learning that the Iranian government has taken a bold step to combat tomorrow’s protests, which mark the anniversary of the Iranian revolution. The country is effectively permanently blocking access to Google’s mail service Gmail, reports the Wall Street Journal:

“Iran’s telecommunications agency announced what it described as a permanent suspension of Google Inc.’s email services, saying instead that a national email service for Iranian citizens would soon be rolled out. It wasn’t clear late Wednesday what effect the order had on Google’s email services in Iran,” wrote Farnaz Fassihi.

The middle-eastern country is notorious for blocking access to social websites, such at YouTube, Facebook, and Twitter during times of unrest. More »

4chan.org Blocked By AT&T

July 26th, 2009 11 Comments   Posted in Online

4chan4chan.org, home of perhaps the most popular image boards and message boards on the internet has posted today that AT&T has blocked img.4chan.org:

It’s come to our attention that AT&T is filtering/blocking img.4chan.org (/b/ & /r9k/) for many of their customers. There is no remedy at this time.

If you’ve been affected, I would advise you call or write customer support and corporate immediately.

While there isn’t any official word from AT&T on this matter (yet), it’s safe to say they should be prepared to receive plenty of backlash from angry customers.

More on this as information becomes available.

UPDATE: Looks like access to 4chan may have been restored by AT&T.
