CDMA iPhone 4 Reportedly in Engineering Verification Test

Verizon Wireless iPhone

At this point in time, there’s really no doubt that Cupertino, California-based Apple will indeed release a CDMA version of the iPhone on Verizon Wireless in January 2011. Mounting evidence from manufacturers and suppliers have show concrete evidence that the company is working/developing a CDMA iPhone. Today, John Gruber from Daring Fireball indicates in a somewhat extensive post that he also believes Apple will release a CDMA iPhone 4 on Verizon Wireless next year in January.

Gruber states that while he doesn’t know what the current status of the negotiations between Apple and Basking Ridge, New Jersey-based Verizon Wireless is, he does know that it’s not in production just yet. Additionally, he states that the CDMA variant of the iPhone has not reached device verification test [DVT], which is the same phase that the iPhone 4 prototype was in when it was stolen or lost by Gray Powell earlier this year.

Gruber does say that the CDMA iPhone 4 is in engineering verification test [EVT], which is the phase prior to DVT. After DVT, the device enters full production. We have previously heard that a Verizon Wireless iPhone 4 would enter full production sometime in December.

The announcement last week that Verizon CEO Ivan Seidenberg will deliver the opening keynote speech at the 2011 International Consumer Electronics Show [CES] in Las Vegas, Nevada only fueled the rumor. Many believe that among the new devices to be announced is a CDMA iPhone for Verizon Wireless.

Now, a post on TechCrunch based on “sources with knowledge of this entire situation” suggests that Apple has ordered “millions of units of Qualcomm CDMA chipsets” to begin manufacturing an iPhone for Verizon Wireless in December. It would appear as if the FCC has approved the Samsung SCH-R900 smartphone, assumed to be the first CDMA/LTE handset approved here in the United States.

Announced back in March at the CTIA conference, the phone is expected to be carried by MetroPCS, a pre-paid carrier. Aside from the 1700/1900 MHz LTE communications radio, Bluetooth module, and WiFi radio, not much is known about the internals of this handset. Hell, it’s not even certain what operating system the handset will run, though Android is likely the most appropriate candidate.

We’re sure to find out more about the SCH-R900 in the weeks ahead. Stay tuned for more information.
