Barcode Google Logo

Today, Google has changed its logo once more. The occasion? They’re celebrating 57 years since the first barcode patent was granted on October 7, 1952. Unlike the colorful doodles we’re used to seeing, this one is a simple big bar code that supposedly says Google. Barcodes have come a very long way throughout the years, apparently. You can find them pretty much anywhere and on everything, from products at the grocery store to applications for smart phones or other devices.

The bar code was invented by Norman Woodland, Jordin Johanson, and Bernard Silver. They filed for a patent on October, 1949. As mentioned above, patent No. 2,612,994 [PDF] was granted 3 years later on October 1952. Nowadays, the bar code is widely used around the world. Lately, the bar code has become an important part of technology as more and more manufacturers and developers are creating applications for mobile devices that make use of the bar code.
