Facebook Has Finally Acquired FriendFeed
After weeks of discussion, Facebook has finally acquired FriendFeed. At this moment, not many details have been released. Although, both companies have officially confirmed the acquisition [Facebook's PR]. The FriendFeed PR says that for the moment FriendFeed will continue to work as normal while the 2 companies figure out their long-term union.
It’s no secret that Facebook incorporated some of FriendFeed’s features to the site over last year. This will help the 2 companies with the transition. There are still a few things in which they are not compatible yet, like the news feed setup. FriendFeed’s system is real-time. As for Facebook, users have to manually refresh their feed.
FriendFeed’s 12-person team will soon move out of their Mountain View offices to join the Facebook team at their Palo Alto headquarters. Even though FriendFeed’s team is small, Facebook is getting a great addition that includes ex-Googlers like Paul Buchheit, who was the creator and lead developer of Gmail among others.
It is unknown if the acquisition was made using either stock or cash only or a mix of both, nor the amount paid is known.
Update: TechCrunch is reporting Facebook paid almost $15 million cash and about $32.5 million in stock for FriendFeed. Bringing the total to almost $50 million.
