Report: Apple Plans To Charge iPad Owners For iOS 4 Upgrade [Updated]

The iPad App Store

Update: It would appear as if these rumors are false. According to Apple’s licensing agreement, the next major update for iPad has been outlined as “free”.

A new report published by blog Stuff.tv suggests that California-based Apple Inc. may be planning to charge iPad users for an upgrade to the iOS 4 mobile operating system — months after the debut of iOS 4 for iPhone and iPod Touch.

The trusted anonymous source indicates the possibility of this happening to be “definite”, but is unable to comment on just how much Apple will be charging customers to upgrade (in which they will receive features such as multitasking, etc.). Stuff.tv speculates that Apple may charge about $7 for the upgrade.

It’s not uncommon. Apple has been known to charge for software updates. Most recently came when Apple finally introduced copy/paste functionality on both iPhone/iPod Touch, which cost many users approximately $10.

Of course, this cannot yet be confirmed, however. Apple has refused to comment on the topic, citing that they do not comment on rumors and speculation, but it won’t be long until we find out what’s really going on here.

Stay tuned.
