I recently had the opportunity [thanks to the guys at WirelessGround.com] to test out the super-affordable Amp’d Mobile Noise Cancelling headphones, manufactured by who else but Amp’d mobile. After several days of testing them out, I can honestly state that these things are fantastic. They’re comfortable, attractive, and most importantly: they do their job.

Let’s get right into it, shall we? Starting off with the packaging — well — it was nothing to write home about. I’ve always hated clamshell packaging, and I was fully expecting to slice my skin. Luckily, I did not. Thankfully, packaging has nothing to do with the product itself, so with the shell removed, I received so much more than I had expected.

What you get:

Here’s what you’ll get: the headphones, an assortment of adapters for mobile devices, a carrying bag, and a standard audio cable with 3.5mm connectors on either end.

The build quality of the headphone are impressive, given the unit’s incredibly low price, which was certainly not expected. The headphones require two AAA batteries (included), and come with built-in volume control and noise canceling controls on the left headphone.

So how does sound and noise canceling fare? Turns out, great! I took the headphones to two locations with somewhat loud fans. Using the ON/OFF switch on the headphones (which activate noise cancellation), the ambient sound was dramatically reduced, replaced by a somewhat silent “environment,” if you will. I say somewhat silent because a soft hum can be heard whenever noise cancellation is activated, which I’ve dealt with before on other models. Activating noise cancellation during audio playback will also provide a welcomed bass boost, along with increased clarity.

Another thing I love about these headphones is the fact that they’re comfortable, though I fear that someone with a huge noggin may find the headphones too small. Additionally, when you’re done using them, you can conveniently fold them up (unlike many other models) for easy transporting.

Overall, I’ve really enjoyed using these headphones. I like that they’re comfortable, deliver impressive audio playback, and cancel noise sufficiently.

On the contrary, I’m not so crazy about the soft hum that is seemingly inescapable with these types of headphones, but we can’t really blame Amp’d Mobile in particular, can we?
