Google Commemorates Pi Day

Google is today celebrating Pi Day, which is a holiday observed in in various countries to commemorate the mathematical constant π [pi]. Google is marking the occasion with a new doodle that features a pi-related sketch with a Google Logo watermark in the background.

Since pi approximately equals 3.14, March 14 [3-14] was chosen as the date to celebrate pi in countries that use the month/date format. Pi Day was founded by now-retired physicist Larry Shaw 1988 at the San Francisco Exploratorium. Nowadays, the holiday is celebrated by eating different kinds of pie, and by discussing the relevance of pi.

It’s also important to take into account that today also happens to be Albert Einstein’s birthday, though Google has not included any references to it.

Thoughts, anyone?

    @DawitZ: Why not just a number Dawitz?

  3. Chitra says:

    Why, the number pi is the best number if anything is possible!!! :|

    @sofa king Kool Dude:
    Happy PI day. Also happy b’day Albert!

    All this is cool and stuff but Einstein was wrong, his theroy only works here not universal and he said he hated physics. He also said in his theroy that the speed of light was a constant not true! But he was one smart dude! “Time has no equal value as to the chain of events that may or may not happen”. (quote by MadManMo)

  7. DawitZ says:

    @Chitra: Pi can be approximated in both fraction or decimal but fraction (22/7) makes more sense and can be celebrated in more countries.

    @Ian: Maybe she’ll give you some Pi.

    A collection of google logos which I love almost as mush as Pi.

    More fun with 3.14.
    Using all three digits exactly once, write a math expession that equals 0 to 100.
    First Dozen
    1 = -3 + 1 * 4
    2 = -3 + 1 + 4
    3 = 3! + 1 – 4
    4 = 3! – 4 * 1
    5 = √4 * 3 – 1
    6 = 3 – 1 + 4
    7 = 3 + 1 * 4
    8 = 3 + 1 + 4
    9 = 3! -1 + 4
    10 = 3! + 1 * 4
    11 = 3 * 4 -1
    12 = 3 * 1 * 4

    120 = (3*4) / .1

    I would leave Pi for the monuments such as the pyramids as my work is not related to such a long number. However, I feel Google’s logo for Pi Day is really cool. Keep up the good work!

    The ratio of the Diameter of a circle to it;s circumference is of fundamental importance to matematics and geometry. So much so that it is the constant chosen by Dr. Sagan to transmit into “space” since if “CONTACT” were to be made this constant would be recognized by intelligent beings. (or so goes the theory!)

    Nobody cares, and 63 is a ridiculous number anyway. Memorize 314, like me.

    @Christopher Tank: it’s my birthday, too (3-14). I love sharing it with einstein! and i love that i got to celebrate it in high school geometry with pie!

    long live pi day!
