Top-Level Domain .XXX Decision Delayed To June

Proposed ten years ago (and rejected three times) to create an online red-light district of sorts, ICANN [Internet Corporation for Assigned Names and Numbers] has delayed a final decision until June of this year as to whether or not to allow ‘.xxx’ top-level domain names from existing.

The suffix would service one and only purpose — pornography [example: sex.xxx]. Purpose, you ask? To help keep minors away from porn (which is mostly hosted on .net and .com top-level domains).  However, some argue that it helps minors access internet porn, given that adult entertainment companies would still maintain their original website address — essentially have two sites and doubling the chance of being accessed by a minor.

When asked on the matter, ICANN CEO stated that “There’s a lot of complex issues,” without providing further detail.

As mentioned, a final decision will be announced in June in Brussels, Belgium.

  1. This top-level domain is unnecessary. Pornographers will continue to use more traditional domains. And given the sophistication of young people today in the use of technology, it will be difficult to hide these websites from them.
