Current Windows Mobile 6.5 Devices Won’t Be Upgraded to Windows Phone 7

First look at Windows Phone 7

Earlier this week, Microsoft unveiled its newest mobile operating system dubbed Windows Phone 7. While many Windows Mobile fans are excited about the new OS, there is some bad news regarding an upgrade to the new platform. In a recent interview with CNET Asia, Microsoft Mobile Communications Business Director Aaron Woodman revealed that current Windows Mobile 6.5-powered devices won’t be eligible to upgrade to the new Windows Phone 7 platform.

When asked if current Windows Mobile users will be able to upgrade to Windows Phone 7, Woodman responded:

“I don’t know if any Windows Mobile 6.5 device today meets those specifications.”

The reason is because current Windows Mobile 6.5 devices don’t have the hardware necessary to support Windows Phone 7. For instance, the new series of Windows Phone 7 devices will have Qualcomm 1GHz Snapdragon processors, and will be equipped to support touch, both things that most WinMo 6.5 devices lack at the moment.

Woodman also revealed that the Windows Mobile 6.5, soon to be renamed Windows Phone Classic, is nowhere near the end of its lifespan. He claimed that WinMo 6.5 “still has a lot of demand and value for both OEMs and customers today.” He expects 14 Windows Mobile 6.x phones to be released in Asia in the next 6 months.

Windows Phone is a dead platform walking.

At least, all the Windows Phones on the market at the moment are obsolete, because they run the older Windows Mobile 6.5. This platform is being phased out. No new software to come. Microsoft’s next platform, Windows Phone 7, is completely different and runs different software, but won’t be out until maybe the end of the year.

So all those Windows Phones in the stores today are the old variety. I wonder how the sales people are going to sell them to anyone. Especially now that we hear that they will not be upgradeable.
