BlackBerry Curve Dominates US Smartphone Market in Q4 2009

Market research firm IDC has released its quarterly list of best-selling smartphones in the US for the fourth quarter of 2009. And it looks like the BlackBerry Curve series dominated the last quarter of the year, followed by none other than the very popular and trendy Apple iPhone. RIM managed to grab four other places, while Android-based devices by different manufacturers only got two.

It’s important to take into account that the list represents vendor sales only, which means the number of units sold to third-party retailers are the figures that count. It doesn’t matter if these third-party retailers only managed to sell a fraction of ordered units to consumers.

Click the break to see the full list, and get ready to be surprised by some of the results.

1.     RIM – BlackBerry Curve
2.     Apple – iPhone 3G S
3.     Motorola – DROID
4.     Apple – iPhone 3G
5.     RIM – BlackBerry Pearl
6.     RIM – BlackBerry Bold
7.     RIM – BlackBerry Storm
8.     Palm – Pre
9.     RIM – BlackBerry Tour
10.   T-Mobile – myTouch 3G

As you can see, Research In Motion’s great selection of smartphones has really paid off. Apple managed to grab second and fourth place with its iPhone 3GS and 3G respectively. Surprisingly, the Motorola Droid took third place. Palm, on the other hand, was left with eighth place with its Pre smartphone. And coming dead last is the T-Mobile myTouch 3G by HTC.
