In-Browser Version of Google Voice Makes Its Way to The iPhone

Good news, iPhone users! It looks like Google Voice is making its way to the iPhone once again as an in-browser application. The news come after an entire fiasco last year, in which Apple rejected Google Voice and all third party applications related to it. Last month, we reported that Riverturn would launch its in-browser VoiceCentral app this year, but we haven’t heard anything else about it. Either way, nothing beats the official application, which becomes available today!

Besides the iPhone, the in-browser Google Voice app will also be available for the Palm Pre and Palm Pixi [a few UI tweaks necessary] at http://m.google.com/voice later today. The website is said to have been built on HTML5. The way it works is pretty simple. When you make a call, the application uses your phone to call Google Voice –which routes the call through its lines. As expected, the person on the other end sees your Google Voice number.

The new in-browser application includes pretty much all the features and functionality the native app originally had, with the exception that it won’t be able to access your local contact list. Other than that, you get the native look and feel, transcribed calls and voice mails, ability to send SMS messages, ability to forward calls to various phones, and you even get notifications on your iPhone via SMS.

As for contacts, Google Voice keeps a separate contact list on the Internet. This means, you’ll have to import and manage your Google Voice contacts yourself. Thanks to HTML5, the application is fast though. HTML5 also supports data caching and voice tags, so you can play voice mails in your browser. Overall, the new in-browser Google Voice looks very promising.
