Ever since Windows 7 was released last year in October, its market share has grown exponentially due to its high popularity. After its big debut, the new Microsoft operating system became so popular in fact that it sold much faster than its Vista counterpart, and quickly surpassed Mac OS X in terms of market share.
At exactly one quarter after its launch, Windows 7 still does not show any signs of slowing down. According to newly released statistics by Net Applications, Windows 7 is now selling at a faster rate than Windows Vista, and has now surpassed versions 10.4, 10.5, and 10.6 of Mac OS X.
Windows 7 now sits at 5.71% after growing 1.71% from November to December 2009. While Windows Vista stands at 17.87% after dropping 0.68% from its previous 18.55%. The three aforementioned versions of Mac OS X together claim 4.87% in terms of market share.
Overall, Windows remains the most popular OS with 92.21% of the market. Mac OS X gets 5.11% of the market, and the remaining 1.02% goes to various Linux distributions.
