Microsoft’s New Bing URL Shortener Does The Opposite Of What It Should

When a company creates a URL shortener, the point is usually to use a domain name with less characters than the original. Example: YouTube has YouTu.be and Google has Goog.le. But apparently Microsoft quite didn’t get the idea with its soon-to-be-released URL shortener for Bing. According to UK Blog My Microsoft Life, Bing’s employee @fareologist has been using binged.it to shorten URLs when tweeting. As you might have already been able to tell, binged.it is one character longer than the bing.com domain name.
In the following statement to the Seattle PI, Microsoft confirmed new Bing URL shortener:
“Currently in partnership with Bit.ly, we are using a URL shortener called Binged.it, available to the internal Microsoft network at this time. We have nothing additional to share at this time.”
It seems strange that Microsoft actually decided to go with a URL shortener longer than its original Bing.com. As MG Siegler from TechCrunch points out, Microsoft could have gone with something like bin.gd (top-level domain .gd belongs to Grenada). We believe Microsoft could have gone even shorter by using just bi.ng. But then again, .ng is the top-level domain for Nigeria — a country whose economy is powered by many online scams.
So what do you think, is binged.it an epic fail, or what?
