Just hours after T-Mobile announced its entire network upgrade to HSPA 7.2, AT&T has also announced the earlier-than-expected completion of its 7.2Mbps HSPA upgrade to all 3G cell sites nationwide. Originally, AT&T planned the upgrade to be completed by 2011.
Unfortunately for all you AT&T customers, this doesn’t necessarily mean you will all get faster speeds. You see, this upgrade is just step one toward faster network speeds. So besides Charlotte, Chicago, Dallas, Houston, Los Angeles, and Miami, which are cities where the company is testing HSPA 7.2, nobody one else will notice a difference.
According to AT&T, this upgrade will just “result in a better overall customer experience by generally improving consistency in accessing data sessions.” The complete roll out is still expected to be completed by 2011, which is the year many expect other networks to start LTE coverage.
Currently, AT&T has only 10 devices that fully support HSPA 7.2 including the LG eXpo, iPhone 3GS, HTC Pure, Samsung Jack, HTC Tilt2, etc.
