HP Investigating Claims of “Racist” Face Detection Software

A few days ago, a video [below] surfaced in which ”Black Desi” and his friend “White Wanda” try to prove to the world that HP’s facial recognition software is, well, racist. As you can see in the video, the computer follows Wanda, but it’s a whole different story as soon as Desi enters the picture. Desi puts the cards on the table and states that “Hewlett-Packard computers are racist.”
HP has now released the following statement on its Voodoo Blog:
“We are working with our partners to learn more. The technology we use is built on standard algorithms that measure the difference in intensity of contrast between the eyes and the upper cheek and nose. We believe that the camera might have difficulty “seeing” contrast in conditions where there is insufficient foreground lighting.”
