BlackBerry Email Also Affected by Outage [Resolved]
Bertrand Vasquez | Dec 22, 2009 | Comments 120
About 3 hours ago, we reported that there was a partial outage in North America affecting BlackBerry Messenger, web browsing, and apps that use a data connection. At the moment, email seemed to be fine. Unfortunately, the outage seems to now be affecting email as well. I personally haven’t received any emails on my BlackBerry Storm. I have further confirmed this with a couple of friends. They have either not received my emails at all or the messages were delayed. This is such an epic fail, considering that just last Thursday [December 17th, 2009], there was another BlackBerry email outage.
Let us know if you’re also experiencing issues sending and receiving emails.
Update: There’s still no official word from RIM. Although, at this moment it’s pretty clear all BlackBerry data services are definitely out. Rumor has it that it may take between 3 hours and an entire day (24 hours!) for the issue to be fully resolved. This might be the worst BlackBerry outage we’ve seen in a while, and we’ve reached out to our press contacts at RIM for official comment.
Update II: RIM has gotten in touch with Erictric, and has made the following statement:
“Some BlackBerry customers in the Americas are experiencing delays in message delivery. Technical teams are actively working to resolve the issue for those impacted. RIM apologizes for any inconvenience experienced by customers.”
Update III: It’s around 12:30 AM on Wednesday, December 23, I am now able to access the Internet from my BlackBerry browser, use apps that use a data connection, and I’ve been getting some emails from earlier. It appears like the service is finally coming back slowly. Let us know how the service is now working for you.
Update IV: RIM has contacted Erictric and made the following statement on Wednesday morning:
“A service interruption occurred Tuesday that affected BlackBerry customers in the Americas. Message delivery was delayed or intermittent during the service interruption. Phone service and SMS services on BlackBerry smartphones were unaffected. Root cause is currently under review, but based on preliminary analysis, it currently appears that the issue stemmed from a flaw in two recently released versions of BlackBerry Messenger (versions 5.0.0.55 and 5.0.0.56) that caused an unanticipated database issue within the BlackBerry infrastructure. RIM has taken corrective action to restore service.”

Total outage up here in Toronto, Ontario
Isn’t it seriously time for these data companies that now
have us totally hooked into their data networks (like BB,
or the cable networks etc.) to develop the backup capacity
like the old Bell network that never seemed to go down. This
sort of amateur stuff (networks of one form or other going down) is so old….
Atlanta, GA is SOL.. Has RIM stated an ETR?
No email or server in saratoga NY… really sucks, I thought it was my cell. Dumped my service books for emails…. now what??????
Down here in Wallingford, CT. SRP connection error….got paged for it….and no one around to confirm buy you guys…Thanks RIM…….Happy Holidays………
I’m in Alpharetta, GA and the “SRP Status” on all 4 of our BES (5,000 devices) indicate “Disconnected”, which has been going on now for over 6 hrs. I spoke to RIM TSupport, but there is still no ETR.
Outage here in Frederick, MD…so annoying!
WTF!!! hope RIM gets there crap fixed I can still at least use opera for the net but no Msgs. or email
Alpharetta, GA. The “SRP Status” on all 4 of my BES now indicate “Connected”, which is a good sign and pending messages are beginning to drop. Still testing it…
12:20 AM on Wednesday, 12/23/09, and the Blackberry email is still not working on Verizon in NYC. Maybe its time to go back to Palm or iPhone or maybe the droid. Tell me its only a bad dream!!
Alpharetta, GA. I’m able to send/receive from my device now, which is on the Sprint network. Messages are beginning to pour into my device and the “SRP Status” on all of our BES now indicates “Connected”. Pending messages on the server are dropping. It looks like they may have resolved it for my area.
Sprint BB Email still not working in Brooklyn NY!
No email in Burlington, WA since 5:47 PM EST.
Make that PST.
My service was out from 4:42PM PST until about about 5 minutes ago.
And I’m in Seattle.
No mail in Memphis.
Email started coming in at 12 midnight PST. Facebook and other data apps started running about an hour later. Internet is up and now I have a Bing application which I didn’t upload. My guess is since (verizon) is trying to push Bing as the main search engine, this might play a part in the outage we experienced today. (?)
@meelanee:
No, it’s not Verizon’s Fault. The Bing app was pushed to BlackBerry Smarphones a while ago. You can find out more about it here and here.
According to RIM, BBM 5.0.0.55 and 5.0.0.56 caused the outage.
No service whatsoever in central Illinois for about 4 hours now.
Verizon.
