Verizon announced today in a press release the introduction of Verizon Wi-Fi, a program that allows its Mobile Broadband or GlobalAccess subscribers to access thousands of Wi-Fi hotspots in the United States, Canada, and Mexico for free. The free Wi-Fi service is available in airports, bookstores, coffee shops, hotels, and other public locations for customers with a a Verizon Wi-Fi supported device such as Verizon’s laptop cards, USB modems, MiFi Mobile Hotspot, et cetera.

The move is meant to take some strain off of Verizon’s mobile network as traffic increases with the release of new data consuming smartphones and devices.
