Next Generation iPhone Being Tested – Identified in Usage Records

According to MacRumors, Pandav, the developer of the iBart app for iPhone, discovered a device identified as “iPhone 3,1″ in its app’s usage records from November. The iPhone 3GS, which is the latest iPhone out in the market, is identified as “iPhone 2,1.” It’s safe to assume that new identifier is that of the yet to be released next generation iPhone.
The usage records where the identifier was spotted are provided to Pandav by PinchMedia. The logs include very detailed information, such as the specific device used to run the application, and end-user usage.
The first references to the iPhone 3,1 were first discovered back in August in an iPhone firmware. The fact that the next generation iPhone has been identified in the wild, suggests that Apple is already testing the new device, which has been rumored to be released in mid 2010. The iPhone 3GS identifier [iPhone 2,1] was similarly discovered in October 2008. That’s 8 months before the device was officially released.
