75% of the mobile web owned by iPhone OS and Android

How many times have you been out in public and seen an iPhone in the last year? Chances are it’s been enough to require a 5th limb. So it comes as no surprise that AdMob’s October 2009 mobile metrics paint a rather amusing if not telling story — the iPhone/iPod Touch and the Android platform are dominating. Not merely conquering, but dominating. 75% of total mobile web traffic domination to be exact. That’s a huge percentage. More precisely, the iPhone OS claims 55% of all mobile web traffic while Android manages to whip up 20%. This increase for Android is pretty striking in itself as no more than roughly half a year ago, Android’s mobile web presence was all of single digit percentages. While the iPhone and Android are enjoying strong growth, their rivals including Palm and RIM aren’t keeping up with each respective manufacture dropping in mobile web share.
Are AdMob’s stats the end all be all of the mobile web? No. But it is a rather clear window into the world of mobile gadgets and how they are really fairing in the hands of mere mortals.
