Yahoo GeoCities Closes Up Shop For Good October 26, 2009

When GeoCities first began in 1994 as Beverly Hills Internet, it almost immediately took off — allowing newbies on the internet to quickly and easily publish a free website. In 1999, Search super-power Yahoo bought the company for $3.75 billion. Ten years later, Yahoo is officially closing GeoCities on October 26, 2009.
Here’s an official statement made by Yahoo:
“…we have decided to focus on helping our customers explore and build relationships online in other ways. Beginning on October 26, 2009, you will no longer be able to use GeoCities to maintain a free presence online — but we’re excited about the other services we have designed to help you connect with friends and family and share your activities and interests.”
We don’t mean to make this sound depressing, because it isn’t. As a matter of fact, we should all be thankful the service is gone. Out with the old, and in with the new.
