5 Things To Do With Your Computer While Waiting For Windows 7

windowssevenSo — you’re waiting for the day when Microsoft releases Windows 7 later this month. You’re probably skipping the “upgrade” option and going right for a clean install (I am heavily contemplating this). Why not have some fun with your computer while you wait? You might be starting from scratch anyway! Here’s a list of 5 things you can do with your computer while you wait for Windows 7.

1.) Apache Web Serverapachelogo

If you’ve ever want to run a website, it’s not easy. There’s much to know about, well, a lot. Why not sharpen your webmastering skills by installing a free and an extremely popular web server software like Apache. Perhaps one of the best aspects of this is that there’s a huge community base always willing to help out.

2.) Linux

ubuntulogoIf you’re going to get yourself started with a web server, you might as well use Linux. There are many Linux distributions out there like Ubuntu, Fedora, and CentOS if you’re serious about learning about servers. Of course, all three here come with a GUI (graphical user interface) for your convenience, but feel free to install something like Ubuntu Server — which is strictly command line. Then again, your computer wouldn’t be of much use to you.

3.) Hackintosh

macfaceWho the hell says you can’t run Mac OS X on your PC? Though this is considered illegal, many people at some point or another want the Mac experience without the Mac cost. Enter Hackintosh (I’m not going to link on this one, due to its sensitive nature, do a Google search). There’s various versions of hacked Mac OS X operating systems fit to run on your PC. There’s massive compatibility differences between the versions, but I’ll leave that research up to you.

4.) MythTV

mythtvicon Too cheap to get yourself a DVR? Make one! If you’ve got another computer to use and need the computing power to record, playback, and save TV programming, then MythTV may be your best bet. Of course, there are other do-it-yourself DVRs out there on the web. You’ll probably be able to compare and contrast the upsides and downsides between them for your particular case. Once again — this is free!

5.) Wait For Windows 7

Speaks for itself, really. You can read our blog everyday =).

Some of these are harder to pull off than others, naturally.
