Google Wave Is The Reason Why Google Created The Chrome Frame Plugin

Earlier today, we reported about the Chrome Frame plugin Google created to turn Internet Explorer into Google Chrome. At first, we thought it probably was a joke or some kind of mockery. Turns out the reason why Google created the plugin is because Google Wave won’t support Internet Explorer. If users want to enjoy the benefits of Google Wave they have to either install the Chrome Frame plugin or install any of the three supported browsers: Google Chrome, Firefox 3.5 and Safari 4. This is what Google had to say on the Google Wave Developer Blog:
“Google Wave depends on strong JS and DOM rendering performance to provide a desktop-like experience in the browser. HTML5’s offline storage and web workers will enable us to add great features without having to compromise on performance. Unfortunately,
In the past, the Google Wave team has spent countless hours solely on improving the experience of running Google Wave in Internet Explorer. We could continue in this fashion, but using Google Chrome Frame instead lets us invest all that engineering time in more features for all our users, without leaving Internet Explorer users behind.”
Will anyone install the Chrome Frame plugin? Actually, the real question should be: is anyone excited about Google Wave? I haven’t seen too much hype about it lately. Obviously, if people are not very interested in Google Wave, they won’t really want to install the Chrome Frame plugin. On the other hand, if people start installing the Chrome Frame plugin, Microsoft will be in big trouble. As for me, I don’t think either Google Chrome or Internet Explorer are perfect.

This is good news for all web workers. If this brings Html 5 to IE, I should imagine that we will see an increase of such things as flash free video, etc.
And it will mean that developers, instead of spending endless hours trying to get a page that renders perfectly in all other browsers, to work in IE, can just use Chrome Frame.
This will be a big problem for Microsoft, and could potentially spell trouble for Adobe’s Flash, especially if Youtube starts using html 5 and chrome frame instead of Flash.
Well i don’t know why there hasn’t been more hype about this. From watching the preview, if google wave works i think it wil be revolutionary in the way people communicate. It seems like it will be as big of a step forward as instant messaging. I’m very excited and cannot wait for the release, bugs or not
can’t wait to get my hands on it – looks amazing – I’m signed up to get the pre-release – hurry up Mr G – “don’t care how I want it mow” (sung to the tune in Charlie and the Chocolate factory)

I’m super excited about Google Wave. Once it’s release word will spread like wild fire from people who realize how useful and revolutionary it is.
Google wave is great ive been saying for years why not integrate email with IM and here it is
the problem google has with wave is that people dont like change and this might be a big change to email which will get duplicated by MICROSOFT and end up as just another facelift to hotmail.
But that being said i love the look of it from what ive seen i think its a great way to use email or whatever we are going to call it.
@Robin:
Yer I agree, if youtube starts using it, which is likely since its owned by Google, then non flash video would have a huge foothold in the market.
I’m excited about wave – have a couple of uses for it already.. although I got an invite to the developer sandbox google never got around to activating me.
Google have a huge amount of market power and before long a significant percentage of users will have chrome frame installed.. if they use it on youtube IE dominance could be wiped out overnight, leading to more standards compliant sites and at last the end of hours of sweating to make things work in IE6.
When the world had only IE and netscape browser we created this technology, build for IE and also run it under netscape with no coding for netscape. Also have a patent approved. We created this @ McAfee.com in 1999. Here is the link to the patent: http://www.google.com/patents?id=WM4LAAAAEBAJ&zoom=4&pg=PA1#v=onepage&q=&f=false
