BlackBerry owners rejoice! You will soon be able to download music OTA just like iPhone users can with iTunes and Nokia users do with Come with Music. Thanks to 7Digital, a UK based music download website, that will be launching an application on BlackBerry’s App World in September that will allow BlackBerry users in the UK, US, Canada, Italy, France, Germany and Spain to download songs and albums directly onto their handsets. About 6 million songs will be available for download, with each song costing 79 cents. Best of all, most songs will be DRM-free, meaning they can be shared among devices.
The application has been pushed by RIM as a way to compete with the Apple iPhone and Nokia N97. “The market is now experiencing the “birth of digital music 2.0″ says Jim Balsillie, the co-chief executive and co-founder of Research In Motion. He goes on to say:
“The thing that gets me excited is the services. It’s like you have this fancy phone, fancy network, what are you going to do with it? It’s like you’ve bought this car and you’re driving around in first gear. I’m trying to get you to try this in second or fourth,”
According to the Telegraph UK, although there are already many music applications, it will be the first time users can download music to their devices.
